His first party

His First Party! So, on Saturday 23 February he got to go to his first birthday party. It was Mummy A’s first cousin’s son’s 5th birthday. I think that makes him my nephew. Actually if you’re getting technical about it, he’s really my first cousin (in law?) once removed…whatever that means.

So we go to the party – and good ol’ Baby A sleeps through the whole thing.

My nephew…sorry, first cousin once removed, was in fine form. He’s lovable and naughty in equal measures. At one point he came up to me and said “Uncle, smell my fart!”. Look, kid, I smell enough of my son’s ones, without needing to smell anymore.

In case you wonder, Baby A is his second cousin(…I think).

Trip to the clinic

crybaby2.gifSo, on February 21 we took him out to the clinic. Here you meet the health visitor and get advice. You also get your baby weighed (He’s put on some weight, hooray!).

Ayaan being Ayaan, he was the only baby that cried whilst there. Typical.

After we left he got to go on his first shopping trip! Alright so it was just to Asda, but it can’t all be baby shops can it – we’ve got to eat don’t we!

Now THAT’S a close shave

As promised, the above pic is the new skinhead look for Baby A after his haircut. I really miss the hair! It was fun styling it:

Did the earth move for you?

Did anyone else feel the earthquake last night? Admittedly you may have missed it as it happened at 1am (we were awake ‘cos Baby A had to be fed…there’s a surprise).

The bed and cupboards started shaking – but c’mon, an earthquake?? In England?!. Has been confirmed though, so we weren’t dreaming.

Hair today, gone tomorrow

img_3317.jpgImportant event in the life of a baby – his first haircut! We practice a custom (which I admit I don’t know enough about) whereby the baby has to have his head shaved within 40 days of his birth. The weight of the baby’s hair in silver is then given to charity. Why silver? Dunno, but please let me know if you do!

My dad was nominated to cut Baby A’s hair as he had asked to do it (see pic on the right). Not quite true actually – my mum had told everyone that my dad could do it easily, my dad hadn’t actually said anything! Hey, I wasn’t to know, but my dad was pretty nervous. Apparently he even contacted a professional hairdresser the previous day to see if they could come round to do it!img_3320.jpgimg_3320.jpg

So, on 17th February, Baby A went on his first trip out of the house over to his grandparents. You’re meant to get a pretty clean shave of his head and we’d been told to use a Mach 3 razor to do it. My father-in-law had the bright idea of using hair clippers first, which the wife was not impressed by – she was convinced he would hate the noise. She was overruled in the end and it was the best thing we could have done.

Amazingly, Baby A didn’t scream and shout like we expected – he slept through the whole thing. Takes after his dad obviously. We were done in half an hour (everyone told us it would take a few hours to do). He didn’t even cry during his bath, so obviously having a lazy day.

Homecoming

Not much to say here. Mummy A and baby were kept overnight on the 29th and Baby A came home the next day.

There were a few worries and niggles for us and Mummy A didn’t enjoy the night at the hospital, so she was relieved to get home. We didn’t get out of the hospital until 5.30pm and I drove the slowest I have ever driven in my life! Think he enjoyed the journey, although he fell asleep the instance the car started!

Story of a birth (part 4)

Baby AWhen the baby came it was very sudden. Mummy A had been struggling and had requested an epidural. The midwife spent so long faffing about with this and that, that just before they were to give the epidural a nurse came in and looked at the monitors.

“Something’s wrong” she said. She checked the positioning of the baby.

“You’re fully dilated,” she said, “the baby has to come out NOW!” She hit this red button on the wall and suddenly the room was full of doctors. It was like something out of ER!

That was at 2.50am. Six minutes later, baby Ayaan entered the world. Have to admit, it brought a tear to my eye.

Mummy A still complains about missing out on the epidural.
